Why we do this

No Media Co. is Chris Frey and Patrick Pittman and a band of people we trust. We’re not a big agency, and deliberately so. We like getting our hands dirty working directly with clients on projects we love, and creating a few of our own things as well. We help build and support media properties, brands, and organizations of all sizes through research-driven advice and strategy, with a focus on making brilliant creative stuff that connects and resonates with people.

Ok, but what does that actually mean?

How are you different?

We’ve produced a lot of great things over the years. Magazines and websites and books and podcasts and videos and other things that we’ve loved making and audiences have loved consuming. We came together because we recognised the unique value of our experiences in creating things that we care about, traversing the independent, mainstream, and commercial worlds.

Why call yourself No Media?

Consider it a symbolic protest against the state of things. Over the years, we’ve witnessed misguided initiatives burn through good money, and great ideas that have fallen by the wayside, or ended up the same as everything else, for lack of sound planning or vision. Fortunately, we’ve also seen some truly inspired work that has pushed at the boundaries, and we’re proud to have been party to some of it.

Why should I work with you?

We’re really quite nice. We’ll tell you what we think, but we won’t bully you or drown you in bullshit. We know what we know and we know what we don’t, which is why, when called for, we put an emphasis on research. We’re careful to only take on projects that we’re confident will have great outcomes for our clients, partners, and audiences — we’re not here to rack up billable hours on stuff you don’t need. We’ve had those jobs and we didn’t like them. You should work with us if you want to work with people who love what they do, and expect you to take them as seriously as they take you.

How do I work with you?

First up, say hello. Let’s start a conversation and figure out if we’re right for each other.

What kind of stuff do you do?

We help build and enhance media properties while also providing research-driven advice and strategy for organizations of all sizes. The focus is on the long term, driving engagement and loyalty, not short term sales campaigns. This can mean standalone digital and print titles, email programs, podcasts, web series, or more experimental approaches to content that are about keeping attention, not just grabbing it.

And you’ve done this before?

We’ve overseen magazines with circulations running from the thousands into the millions, and digital properties that have played at the cutting edge of content and design. As No Media Co, we’ve applied what we’ve learned to strategy, planning and content creation with media organisations and businesses of all sizes. We’ve always made magazines because we’re driven to, and we always will, but it’s not all we do. We take the considered, creative mindset we honed in the print world and apply it just as soundly to other platforms. We start with research, insight, and experimentation, and take it from there.

Is there anything you won’t do?

We’re not a content marketing company. We don’t do piecemeal content for existing properties, though we do continue to write for a range of publications that matter to us. If you want SEO-driven, keyword heavy content with a focus only on immediate numbers, that’s fine! There are plenty of people that can do that for you. But we can’t help you. We’re not a social, ad, or design agency though we can connect you with those. We’re not a business consultancy but if your business touches on content, and most do, we have plenty of ideas for you.

Got any awards?

Sure. A whole passel. Not that we hang them on the wall or anything, but here are just a few: Magazine of the Year, Best Website, Best Video (and many more) at the National Magazine Awards, plus awards from Folio and the Content Marketing Association for work with brands like Acura. Check out our bios for more of the huzzahs.

Got any thoughts on the industry?

We love working in media. We hate that it’s hurting. The business models that underpin it are broken. We don’t believe this is the fault of any particular individual or company (you’re catching us in a generous mood) and we take little joy in it. What we’re trying to do here is experiment, explore, and uncover new ways of working in both editorial and commercial contexts. Our goal is to help develop a more sustainable model for the many talented creators in this world.

How do you feel about buzzwords?

They’re so dynamic! We have a conversion funnel just loaded with them, all those high performance metrics driving your ROI upswing. But you know what? You won’t find us using them, nor producing work that’s designed purely around them. Our commercial work is about more considered engagement, not just the raw numbers. That said, we know you might have something to sell and a boss that needs you to justify how you’re selling it, so we’re more than happy to help you translate our ideas of value into the language of your world. We won’t even grumble. Not a bit. Well, not much.

What if I just want to say hello?

Well that’s just fine. Hello! We also like drinks. Some of our best work is done near them. We sometimes even like to have them with company. If you’re ever in Toronto please look us up.
